The reasons why people volunteer at Battleship Cove are as diverse as the talents they bring to the table. From carpenters to plumbers, from electricians to tailors, we are fortunate to host a highly skilled and loyal volunteer corps at the museum.

So why should YOU volunteer at Battleship Cove? Well, when you consider the multitude of sacrifices that our veterans have made for us, isn't our our obligation to give something back?

We think so, and so do our volunteers. Sure, many are diehard sailors who have made patriotic service their hallmark, but we are also fortunate to have a healthy number of civilians who simply want to show their gratitude to our men and women in uniform. (Naturally, some of our volunteers are just along for the fun, and well, that's okay, too!)

Whether you're an old salt who wants to test the sea legs, or you just want to meet new friends, we have a job for you. Browse the links at right for details, or contact our volunteer coordinator to learn more.

Original BB59 crewmember Armand Vigeant won the Hometown Hero award for his volunteer work at the Cove.

HOMETOWN HERO: Armand A. Vigeant has logged more oceangoing miles on board the battleship than any other crew member. A self-proclaimed "jack of all trades," this BB59 plankowner is a longtime volunteer who coordinates the ceremonial firing of the battleship's 5-inch guns and coordinates the annual raising of the ship's "Med Lights" during the Christmas season. Vigeant's star shines brightest, of course, when he chats with kids and tour groups about the history of the battleship from his personal experience.

Vigeant, who grew up in Fall River and has lived in Somerset for the last 36 years, said he enjoys his volunteer work because the battleship is a nice place to be.

"You meet old friends and it brings back memories," he said. Vigeant said when he sees something that needs to be done on the ship, he does it.

VISIT FOR FREE: Did you know that you can visit Battleship Cove for free all year for as little as $35? And that's just one of many perks enjoyed by Museum Members. Follow this link to learn more!
