From the harrowing trials in the early Pacific war to the evolution of Rickover’s nuclear navy, Battleship Cove gives visitors a firsthand appreciation of a sailor’s life undersea.

Painstakingly restored to her classic World War II configuration, Lionfish has been refurbished with machinery, equipment, and her original ordnance suite, which includes a rare, authentic 5”/25 caliber wet mount. Soon state-of-the art video monitors will animate Lionfish’s compartments with crewmembers’ sea stories and firsthand explanations of the myriad technologies embedded within the boat’s sleek contours. These monitors, combined with impressive submarine artifacts and new interpretive signage, will effectively convey the Spartan conditions endured by the brave men of America’s “silent service.”

But the lessons of the silent service don’t end on Submarine Lionfish. At Battleship Cove, we reinforce the submarine tradition throughout your visit, offering underwater ordnance exhibits, submarine model displays, and a regular rotation of submarine films.

Do you know how submarines dive?

THAT SINKING FEELING: A submarine submerges in the same way a damaged ship sinks: The weight, or density, of the sinking vessel exceeds the weight of the water the ship displaces. However, submarines are able to control this process with special ballast tanks that can admit or expel seawater to influence the sub's weight.

To submerge, a submarine opens special valves at the top and bottom of its ballast tanks. When these valves open, air escapes from the top as seawater enters from the bottom. The seawater entering the tank is heavier that the air it replaces, increasing the density of the submarine and causing it to submerge. To surface, high-pressure is is pumped back into the ballast tanks, expelling the seawater and lightening the submarine.
