PRESS SUMMARY
Located on the waterfront in historic Fall River, Massachusetts, Battleship Cove is a nonprofit maritime museum and war memorial that is home to the largest and most diverse collection of preserved US Navy ships in the world. It is the Commonwealth’s official memorial for September 11th and the official veterans’ memorial for World War II and the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars.
Battleship Cove harbors five National Historic Landmarks: Battleship
USS
Massachusetts (BB-59), Destroyer
USS
Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (DD-850), the World War II Attack Submarine
USS
Lionfish (SS-298), and PT Boats 617 and 796. Its collection also includes a Drone Anti-Sub Helicopter, Cobra Attack and UH-1 “Huey” helicopters, a T-28 Trojan and the USA‘s only exhibited example of a Soviet-built missile corvette, the
Hiddensee. Also on site are the National PT Boat Museum, the National Destroyermen’s Museum and the historic Fall River Carousel, a fully restored and functioning 1928 wooden carousel. The bow of the
USS
Fall River flanks the entrance to Battleship Cove.
The centerpiece of the world-class museum is the Battleship
USS
Massachusetts, which arrived in Fall River in June of 1965 after decommissioning by the Navy and a successful campaign by the wartime crew of “Big Mamie” to save the ship from the scrap yard. As one of the region’s most valuable cultural assets, the Cove has hosted more than 5 million visitors over nearly a half-century.
The opening in August 2011 of the only outdoor multimedia reenactment of Pearl Harbor anywhere marked the beginning of an exciting new phase at Battleship Cove. The dynamic “The Pearl Harbor Experience” brings to life this seminal moment in American history with archive film, state-of-the art special effects and surround-sound. As a leading historical and cultural destination for visitors from all over the world, Battleship Cove is providing the opportunity to relive the lessons of the 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in a way that speaks to the technologically sophisticated audience of today…and tomorrow.
