Dominic "the Little Professor" DiMaggio

STUDYING HISTORY WITH "THE LITTLE PROFESSOR": During World War II, many professional athletes answered the call to duty. For example, "Rapid Robert" Feller served on a 40MM Bofors crew on USS Massachusetts' sister ship Alabama, and Ted "the Splendid Splinter" Williams served as a Marine Corps fighter pilot. However, the Navy also assigned ballplayers to important roles as noncombatants, and one of the most famous such men is Battleship Cove's close friend, Dominic "the Little Professor" DiMaggio.

In 2001, Battleship Cove interviewed Dom for its oral history program, and now when you visit Battleship Cove you can listen to the former Red Sox slugger's stories about skippering a PT boat in San Francisco Bay and playing ball in Brisbane to bolster the moral of Allied servicemen overseas.
