Today, USS Lionfish survives as a memorial for American submariners who died in service to their country in WWII and as a magnificent educational artifact that helps younger generations understand how the historical and technological achievements of the past are still relevant in the 21st century.

Each year, more than 60,000 young people climb on board Lionfish to learn how submariners have grappled with the challenges of World War II, the Cold War, and today. From the harrowing trials in the early Pacific war to the evolution of Rickover’s nuclear navy, USS Lionfish gives visitors a firsthand appreciation of the many sacrifices of the submarine force.

WOMEN PROTCTING US: While formal military status for US women began in 1942, women have always borne the burden of military conflict. Often unrecognized, their contributions paved the way for the legions of women...Ctd.

SOUND WAVE SCIENCE: How do you transform traditional classroom knowledge into a richer understanding of global events and the characters who shaped them? You look below the surface. And there’s no better way to dive below the surface than on Submarine Lionfish during our Sound Wave Science Workshop. Exploring the submarine through hands-on activities, students examine the application of sound waves for navigation and communication. The use of sound waves is tied into SONAR on both surface ships and submarines, and students will have the opportunity to visit a SONAR room on a ship at Battleship Cove.
