In the spring of 2008, Captain John Casey was promoted to executive director of Battleship Cove after a seven-year term as the museum's chief operating officer.

He enlisted in 1962 and was commissioned in 1968 upon graduation from Maine Maritime Academy with a BS in Marine Engineering. He joined the Merchant Marine during the Viet Nam conflict, coming ashore in 1971 to join the Terry Corporation, a manufacturer of commercial, nuclear, and naval steam turbines.

In 1990, Captain Casey formed his own company, which specialized in asbestos and lead abatement as well as indoor air quality.

Captain Casey completed a distinguished 35-year Naval Reserve career in June of 1998. His assignments of increasing responsibility included five command tours. He served at the Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity, Naval Reserve Maintenance facility, Newport, RI, in various maintenance assignments and as its last Commanding Officer.

Active in civic affairs, he has served as Town Party Chairman and Vice Chairman, a 13-year member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, co-founder of the local Chamber of Commerce, and was elected to serve as Town Selectman.

PIER LEADERSHIP: Battleship Cove Director George Pelletier has been involved with Fall River's waterfront development for more than 40 years. A Spindle City native, Mr. Pelletier attended Fall River public schools and Thibideau Business College before the outbreak of World War II. In 1942, Mr. Pelletier enlisted in the army, landing in Normandy on D-Day+6.

After returning from the war, Mr. Pelletier joined the Fall River Fire Department, retiring in 1984. Subsequently, this entrepreneur started his own insurance business and shortly thereafter became the President of the State Pier and Chairman of the Port Authority.

Mr. Pelletier's relationship with Battleship Cove began in 1962, as he and a group of associates developed a vision for the memorial museum. A former president of the board, this dedicated director often strolls through BB59's passageways greeting youngsters, and has, on more than one occasion, even helped shovel out chow in the mess line!
