Beyond the Sea
Fall River's future rides on Battleship's boats

Since 2001, the community boating program at Battleship Cove has made great strides forward. Our youth scholarship program has seen more then 600 students begin their journey into the world of sailing, and our community sailing program continues to provide affordable sailing access, with more members and drastically expanded hours. Race night, a newer addition to the program, has been a great success, with as many as seven boats competing each Wednesday night. More than 40 people were involved during the Fall River Celebrates America Regatta. We had 12 boats on the starting line and enjoyed great racing and a terrific lunches provided by Norma Rose. We also now deliver adult classes at the Cove, a welcome addition to our sailing curriculum.

In the coming seasons we are looking to expand upon our success. Expect to see a lot of action this spring at the Cove with many new programs and offerings. Providence Country Day’s sailing team now calls Battleship Cove home, hosting numerous events at our facility. Through our afterschool sailing program, Fall River youth will take to the water in late May. We are also branching out to local colleges such as UMass Dartmouth, offering recreational and instructional programs for college students.

In 2007, our extended classes will enable youth and adult students to develop their sailing skills and become confident, competent sailors. During the summer, our youth program will continue its partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and Fall River Community Recreation.

Our adult sailing programs are also expanding, offering a complete schedule of adult courses and affordable membership options that make sailing accessible to all. The boating program at Battleship Cove is just one example of how we are working to revitalize the Fall River waterfront. We encourage all to come by the boathouse and experience these programs in action. If you would like to become involved with the boating program, we encourage you to contact the Director of Sailing for membership information and course schedules.
