In 1980, retired Navy commander George Post volunteered to work with the model aircraft exhibit on board USS Massachusetts. When Post retired to Florida in 1994, the collection had evolved into one of the largest in the Northeast: The original 684 square feet dedicated to that space now encompasses five spaces, more than 3000 square feet, on the third deck.

Since Post's departure, longtime Cove volunteer Joseph McDonald, a retired teacher, has reinterpreted the collection and reorganized the models to reflect various time periods (e.g., WWI, WWII, and Korean-era) specific battles (e.g., the Battle of Britain and Pearl Harbor), and geographic areas of operations (e.g., Pacific Theater, North Africa, etc.).

Add to that a comprehensive display of tanks, armored and amphibious vehicles, and an assortment of miniature models of uniformed US military personnel, and you have an exhibit that is worth a visit to Battleship Cove!

"There was an esprit des corps among the men there that if anyone was ever in trouble, everyone would do his best to help them out."

A MAN OF METTLE & MEDAL: Medal of Honor recipient Thomas Hudner knows what loyalty means. When enemy flak sent his wingman, Jesse Brown, crashing into the snow-covered slopes of the Chosin Reservoir, Hudner promptly crash-landed his F-4U Corsair in a heroic attempt to save him. As smoke plumed from Brown's burning wreckage and nearby Communist troops threatened, Hudner packed snow into the flames and struggled to extricate Brown from his plane. For Fall River native Tom Hudner, leaving a shipmate behind was not an option.

At Battleship Cove, we are dedicated to preserving the distinguished cultural legacy of veterans like Tom Hudner and Jesse Brown, and we invite you to join as a member of our team.
