Battleship Cove Seeks Men for Oral History Interviews
Fall River: The Commonwealth's largest
oral history department at Battleship Cove is currently looking
to interview men who served on the homefront during World War II.
Our nation's most devastating war brought a tremendous shortage
of labor. Not only was there great demand for labor to build up
the war machines necessary to fight, but the men were leaving civilian
employment for military service in huge numbers. To fill the shortage,
society asked women to fill the jobs and they rushed to take them.
For the first time, men and women were working side by side in factories
and other industries. If you can recall your experience working
in the new integrated workforce, Battleship Cove would like to speak
to you. Call Michele Kelly, Director of Oral History at 508-678-1100
x 124.
Battleship Cove serves as the Commonwealth's
official memorial for Massachusetts citizens of all military branches
who lost their lives in World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam and
Persian Gulf Wars. Recently, this memorial mission was expanded
to include the Commonwealth's victims of the September 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks. Preserving five National Historic Landmark naval
vessels, Battleship Cove also delivers educational programs that
expose a national audience of 60,000 youths to a mission that promotes
duty, honor and country.
