Battleship
Cove Brings Law & Order to Fall River
"Law & Order" star Sam Waterston was Guest of Honor
for 3rd Annual Victory at Sea
FALL RIVER, MA: On Saturday, July
19th and Sunday, July 20th, Battleship Cove held their 3rd annual
Victory at Sea Twelve Meter Charity Regatta. Chaired by Dominic
DiMaggio (the former Red Sox slugger and subject of the bestselling
book Teammates) and his wife Emily, Victory at Sea attracted
more than 350 guests who anted up nearly $125,000 for the nonprofit's
preservation and educational programs.
Sam Waterston, star of "Law & Order,"
was Guest of Honor for the event, which included two days of races
in the steely waters of Mt. Hope Bay on board America's Cup 12-Meter
yachts and a gala dinner Saturday evening on board the U.S.S. Massachusetts.
The 12-meter yacht Intrepid, winner
of the America's Cup in 1967 and 1970, battled her way to victory
in Saturday's race, winning the "Walter Cronkite Cup"
for sponsor George Mercier of Westport, Massachusetts. Clinching
2nd place for the "Admiral Whiting Cup" was the 1962 America's
Cup winner Weatherly, sponsored by Ben Baker of South Dartmouth,
Massachusetts.
Sunday's races to Newport, Rhode Island
were victorious for two America's Cup contenders. Wendy Guertin
and Seth Bowerman of Providence, RI's Bowerman & Taylor Guertin,
P.C. took home the first place "Dominic DiMaggio Cup"
when Ted Turner's famous champion American Eagle whisked
past Ted Hood's powerful 1962 contender Nefertiti. For the
crew's incessant efforts, Ms. Vera Gibbons of Mattapoisett, Massachuetts,
walked away with the 2nd place "Veterans Memorial Cup."
The event concluded with a Bon Voyage reception
at the New York Yacht Club Harbor Court in Newport, RI. Sunday's
social affair was attended by more than 100 people, including those
who raced on the America's Cup Charter yachts and those who viewed
the races from the 72' spectator power yacht Coastal Queen,
owned by Jim Bishop of New York City.
Victory at Sea is the principal fundraiser
of Battleship Cove, a maritime heritage museum comprising five National
Historic Landmarks within the world's largest and most diverse collection
of historic naval ships. Recently appointed as the site of the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts' official memorial to its victims of the September
11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Battleship Cove serves as the Bay State's
official memorial to WWII and the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf
Wars.
